Electronic Screens and Skin Damage

You’re most likely aware of the damage that UVA & UVB rays from the sun have on your skin. New studies have shown, however, the blue light that emits from your screens (phones, TVs, computers, tablets) – also known as high-energy visible or HEV light – can also cause damage. With that in mind, it’s important to know how to prevent the effects of HEV light exposure.

While HEV light doesn’t cause burning or redness that would be visibly seen on the surface, it instead goes deeper than the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light. Known to impair the skin’s natural barrier function, it negatively impacts your collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid supplies. These are the very substances that give your skin the elastic and supple properties most associated with youth. HEV also targets the pigment that gives your hair, skin, and eyes their color (melanin), which likely plays a role in pigment issues that can occur with over exposure.

Prevention is key, and sunscreens that block HEV light can help protect your skin from damage. The Rolling Stone MedSpa is happy to supply the full line of UV & HEV-blocking sunscreens from ZO Skin Health for your skin protection. So, before you power-up your electronic screens, be sure to “screen” yourself first. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.
